How much?

The United States National debt as of Jan. 31, 2011 at 2:45 pm is

Expert say that, on average, our debt increases $4.15 billion each day.

This raises the question: How is this money being spent?

This chart illustrates one month of spending.
As shown in the graph, the two largest percentages of our money are allocated to Social Security and Defense.
Certain analyses believe that, in order to decrease the debt, we have to cut funding to certain programs. The ones that are at risk of suffering sever budget cuts include defense, social security and education.

Our defense system is compromised of the Air force, Navy, Army, Marines and Coast Guards men and women. They are what protects this country from foreign and domestic threats. As a nation we are currently fighting two wars, and Obama is sending more and more soldiers overseas. How could we cut the them off? They already work holidays, and risk their lives everyday living in hazardous conditions. They have to ration their food, and live in tents with triple digit temperatures during the day and temperatures approaching freezing at night.

Instead of cutting our defense system I suggest we cut the amount the United States spends on other countries for their wars.

The United States is a dominant world power, and as such we account for over 40 percent of the world's total military spending. China ranks number two in spending. Although this does not sound like a big difference, the US spends seven times as much money on military spending as China does.
Another program that is facing possible cuts is Social Security,
Social Security is a government program that provides economic assistance to people who are unemployed, have a disability that prevents them from working , or whose age makes working difficult to impossible.

There are many different opinions concerning Social Security.

Many people believe social security should not be altered, others want it to become privatized, and other say the amount distributed should be reduced.
Education's budget is up for cuts as well.

In the State of the Union Address President Obama said "If we want to win the future- if we want innovation to produce jobs in America and not overseas- then we also have to win the race to educate out kids."

Education is defined as the process of acquiring general knowledge, developing reasoning and judgement, and generally preparing one or others intellectually.

One greatest rights the United States offers and enforces is the right for everyone to have an education, no matter where or what your economic status.

College is making up for the free education by costing thousands of dollars. Some schools cost as much as $30,000 a semester.

Back in the day college was only offered to only the wealthy but, that changed when community college entered the picture, offering everyone else the same education. However, we seem to be regressing.

Since President Obama has entered the White House college prices have been on the rise with no end in sight.

With the economic status of this country being the way it is prices are going up while the paychecks are becoming smaller. In the State of the Union Address Obama stated, "Americans paychecks are a little bigger today." However, he failed to take into consideration the new tax that is being taken out of hard working men and women's paycheck starting in January of 2011.

Most college students have to take out multiple loans and/or grants in order to pay for 1 year of college. Since beginning my education at the University of Houston I realized there is no way that you can graduate in 4 years. Class caps and the restrictions created by classes only offered certain semesters create a minefield of difficulty. You would be lucky to graduate in five years. Recently, UH has been dubbed "tier one status" which means higher tuition costs, and more loans to be taken out by the students.

It is getter harder and harder to educate one's self. Jobs are another problem after graduating. On average for a college graduate takes 8 to 12 months to find a job and majority of the time the jobs are nothing to do with their degree.
Cutting the education budget would be costly to college students and as well as elementary and secondary students.

The U.S. rankings in reading, math and science compared to other countries are beyond poor. The United States ranks:
33rd in Reading
27th in Math
and
22nd in Science

The top three countries that dominate the charts are Finland, Canada and Korea.

Millions have come to America for the American dream because America is the best. We might be best in other areas, but our education system severely needs help.

The U.S. deficit is not helping the students of America and each attempt get the budget under control has worse outcomes than the previous attempts.

The government, colleges, and schools need to up their standards if they want to keep on increasing the cost.
In order to "win the future" they need to develop a plan to keep higher education  obtainable for the masses.

When I graduate from UH I don't know if I will be able to get a job. Without a job there is no way I will be able to pay off my student loans, especially with the way the economy is today.
